Summer at the Pool

I've been asked to take part in a charity exhibition by The Pool, an Irish production house. The theme is "Summer at the Pool", the medium is anything I want.

I'll be posting up work in progress over the next few weeks. Here's my first line drawing. Colour is coming up next.

Some Friday Morning Goodness

Two nice sites to share with you this morning.

First up, the brilliant work of Adam Simpson. Adam's Boundries piece (below) was nominated for this years British Design Awards and it's one of many great pieces of work on his site. Have a look at the images below and check out his site.

In these days of web 2.0 and Flash everything, it seems as if the animated giff is making a comeback. These giffs are a lot better than the flashing unicorns I remember. Iamnotanartist is a work in progress project commissioned by the Elisava School of Design . It started with 56 animated giffs created by Johnny Kelly and Matthew Cooper, and people are adding their versions daily. You can download screensavers too, if you don't it flashing in your face all day.

Some things I found

I picked up a copy of this months Computer Arts magazine. And in it I found three very interesting links. The first two are for up and coming Finnish Illustration agencies Pekka and Napa (cool names). Having browsed through some of their work I hit the bookmark button and prayed for a decent brief to appear on my desk. Here is a selection of some of the illustrations I particularly liked:

Right now I'm downloading my copy of Carne Magazine. The magazine was created by members of Bestial and Picante, two deign studios based in Buenos Aires. I'm currently browsing their sites while writing this and waiting for the download.

Okay download finished I'm off to have a read.

Jules Julien Illustration

It's been a while since I posted an illustrator on the blog. Jules Julien's work (and somewhat symmetrical name) was suggested to me and I couldn't say no. The image above is from a series created for the French Embassy in Japan. It's one of a many great things on his site. Well worth a visit if you're not working too hard or if like me you're pretending to work real hard.

Thanks Eve for the link. You rock. As always.

Olly Moss and the Electronic Book

I really like the work of Olly Moss. I found his Movies in Black and Red before on a Flickr photostream but never looked at the rest of his site. His work is graphic and clever, my kind of thing. I especially like the cover he just completed for Penguin. I like my gadgets but I really hope the electronic book never takes off.

And finally... a really nice and inventive use of Twitter. Illustrator Joanna Basford has asked people to follow her on Twitter and suggest things to be drawn. I missed out due to my lack of internet collection grrr. A great idea though.

I really like this image. Part of the "Crash" series by New York based Scott Teplin.
The illustrations of Brazilian Rubens LP.
Loving these photographic illustrations by Martin Wilson. The one above is my favorite but check out his site for some really interesting typographic pieces.
Illustrator Kristian Hammerstad. I like this image and the horror monster style of his/her (I don't know which!) illustrations.

Nadav Kander is a brilliant photographer. One day I'll have the client and budget to work with this guy.
London and NY based illustration agency the heart agency. A nice collection of artists.
Some really nice illustration work from Sam Green.

Artist Chris Dorosz created these amazing images by trapping paint drops in clear plastic tubes. There's a video on his site showing how it's done. A brilliant idea.

Shohei is an illustrator based in Tokyo. All of his amazing work is produced using just a humble ball point pen. The websites in Japanese but just click away and you'll find some amazing images.
I really really like this image from Geraldine George. The rest of her work is amazing but this particular piece is just perfect in my opinion.
I really like these boat paintings by Eric Ernest Johnson. I'm now off to explore the rest of his work.
