Inspiration from the Digital Arts

In advertising we use film (or what some 10yr old kid put on YouTube) as inspiration for TV ads; graphic design and art as inspiration for print. It's at the fringes of any creative industry that we find the ground-breaking work, the stuff that's really pushing the boundries, not just re-hashing someone else's facebook campaign.

Digital art is where technology and creativity is being pushed to it's limits, and it's here that we should be looking for inspiration, collaboration and a glimpse of things to come.

Below are links to some amazing people and work in this field.

Irvine Brown has an inspiring collection of work. In one project he uses a remote control car to teach people how to breathe correctly when singing. If your breath is controlled enough the car will perform a perfect three point turn.

Tinker are a London based multi-disciplinary team of creative technologists.  The indoor sundial above is one of an amazing group of projects on their site.

Niklas Roy's "My Little Bit of Privacy" above is a brilliant example of how technology can be used with everyday items to create something special. More great work on his site.

If you'd like to discover more of these digital artists and their projects you should spend some time exploring the Openprocessing site and the exhibition section of Processing site.

Google Says "Thank You"

AKQA, PostPanic and Rehabstudio have created this thank you from Google to all of it's 1 million AdWords clients worldwide. Each film is customised to display the viewers company name, making 1 million unique films.

As Creative Review describes it:

"Rehabstudio created a system that personalised each film, inserting the individual name of each advertiser into the action. AdWords then sent an email to all its customers globally, inviting them to view their bespoke film via a YouTube channel."

It's an interesting to see how digital can be used to turn the "traditional" medium of the mass-market TV ad into something unique and personal.

Is 2011 The Year Of TV And The Internet?

When the mobile phone met the Internet it changed it forever, this year it seems as if our TV's are going to get a similar treatment. All of the major players are beginning to deliver services for the TV: YouTube, Vimeo, Apple, and Google; and when these companies get involved, you know there's something major on the horizon.

Andy Kinsella has written a short and useful post on his blog discussing the new and upcoming TV / internet offerings. Here are some of the links from his post:

YouTube Leanback – http://www.youtube.com/leanback
Vimeo Couchmode – http://vimeo.com/couchmode
YouView – http://www.youview.com/
Boxee – http://www.boxee.tv/
Apple TV – http://www.apple.com/appletv/
Google TV – http://www.google.com/tv

This is obviously a very exciting opportunity for brands, and it certainly throws into question the validity and relevance of the 30 second TV spot. Very exciting times for those in advertising.
